Republicans walk out of budget talks over taxes

(Reuters) - Republicans walked out of budget talks on Thursday, setting up a showdown between President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner over how to extend U.S. borrowing and avoid a looming debt default.
Vice President Joe Biden and a handful of lawmakers had been working on a budget-cutting deal that would allow Congress to sign off on continued borrowing, but Republicans quit unexpectedly after saying the group had reached an impasse over tax increases sought by Democrats.
"It is time for the president to speak clearly and resolve the tax issue," said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who had represented House Republicans in the talks. Republican Senator Jon Kyl also pulled out.
An agreement would give lawmakers political cover to raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling before August 2, when the Treasury Department has said it will run out of money to pay the country's bills.
Default could occur if Congress does not act by then, which could push the United States back into recession and send markets plunging around the globe.
Obama will now probably have to wholesale cellphone hammer out a deal with Boehner, the top Republican in Washington, and Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid -- the same trio that took the government to the brink of a shutdown in an earlier budget battle this spring.
"I think it's in the hands of the speaker and the president, and sadly, probably me," Reid said at a news conference. No initial meeting has been set, he said.
Biden said his group has always intended to hand the baton to Obama and Boehner.
"The next phase is in the hands of those leaders, who need to determine the scope of an agreement that can tackle the problem and attract bipartisan support," he said in a statement.
Boehner said talks could resume if Democrats took tax hikes off the table, but they showed no sign of backing off.
So far, the possibility of default has not affected bond markets as investors focus on other news and assume Washington will ultimately strike a deal -- probably at the last minute.
"This is going to look ugly for the next few weeks," said Greg Valliere, a political analyst for investors at Potomac Research Group.
DEAL NOT NECESSARILY OUT OF REACH
Obama and Boehner have tried to establish a personal rapport since this spring's budget battle. The two golfed together on Saturday and met at the White House on Wednesday.
Cantor, who was building a similar bond with Biden, gave no indication after Wednesday's session that talks had hit a wall.
His withdrawal caught Democrats by surprise, coming as Obama met with House Democratic leaders at the White House before the afternoon's scheduled negotiating session.
"It appears that Cantor has obviously had enough of these negotiations and Kyl followed suit, but there has been progress made. It's not as if nothing has happened," Reid said.
Negotiators had reached tentative agreement on more than $2 trillion in cuts covering wide swaths of the federal budget, according to an aide familiar with the talks, affecting health programs, annual spending, benefits like farm subsidies and tuition aid, and automatic limits on future spending.
But Democrats would not relent on taxes, the aide said.
Republicans have said from the outset that any tax increases will not pass the House. Democrats saw an opening, though, after many Senate Republicans supported a move to repeal a tax break for ethanol last week over the objections of anti-tax activists.
In recent sessions, Democrats had pressed to close a wide range of tax breaks, from oil and gas subsidies to breaks that benefit wealthy individuals.
REPUBLICANS MAY NOT HAVE THE VOTES
Republicans may not have enough votes to pass a deal through the House in any case, as many newly elected conservatives feel little urge to compromise.
That means Boehner may have to rely on Democratic votes, and Democrats will insist that tax increases be part of the deal, one lawmaker said.
"I think we walk away unless there's some revenue raisers," Democratic Representative Allyson Schwartz said at a breakfast event hosted by Third Way, a centrist think tank.
Cantor and Boehner may need to allow a debt-ceiling vote to fail before they can craft a compromise, budget expert Stan Collender said. That could provide a jolt to markets akin to the failed bank bailout vote of 2008, which caused the Dow Jones Industrial Average to drop 800 points.
"There may need to be a negative market reaction to that vote to get Republicans to move from their current position," said Collender, a budget analyst with Qorvis Communications.
Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad warned that those sorts of tactics could lead to hundreds of billions of dollars in additional interest costs for the government to reflect the additional uncertainty of investing in U.S. debt.
One Democratic aide said Cantor recognized that tax increases would ultimately have to be part of any deal but that he did not want to be the one to say so.

    RIM, You’re Done Here

Research In Motion is done. They’ll be bought in the next year or so, their products will roll into whoever buys them – Microsoft, most probably – and they’ll go the way of Nokia, Danger, and countless other mobile platforms. They’ll exist independently for a while and then be subsumed. It’s over.
    Here’s why.
There is no money in “business” phones. Blackberries aren’t status symbols. They’re the real-world equivalent of the thick, heavy IT-department-assigned business laptop. They’re staid, boring, and unwanted but people are used to them and, for email, they are quite capable. But that’s about it.
But these phones are increasingly getting a drubbing from IT departments who are starting to support more popular devices including, obviously, iOS and Android phones. No one ever got fired for installing a BES, but you can be sure someone will get fired for not supporting WebDAV standards over the next few years.
You can make lots of money selling hardware to fleet buyers, to be sure. But when those fleet buyers are saving money buy refusing to pay for devices, where do you think consumers are going to go? Back to the same hardware they’ve been saddled with for years?
Their audience has already moved on. I remember a few years ago I was invited onto MTV (and never invited back) to talk about the “top smartphones.” I think it was 2007. These included a Windows Mobile device, a new Sidekick, and, inexplicably, a Blackberry Curve. The results of a viewer survey had the Sidekick beat out the other devices quite handily but what I couldn’t understand was how the Curve, for all its benefits, could have made it onto the list in the first place. The Sidekick was a lifestyle device and even the WinMo-powered Dash by HTC could be seen as a lifestyle device. But the Curve? Never.
RIM has an audience, but that audience is shrinking. Arguably they had a good run, but there are plenty of other devices from other manufacturers – Microsoft included – that have much more cachet in terms of general appeal. Even BBM no longer sounds as enticing as it once did, especially in an era of Facetime, Qik, and Hipchat.

Skype Fires Executives, Avoiding Payouts After Microsoft Buyout

June 19 (Bloomberg) -- Skype Technologies SA, the Internet- calling service being bought by Microsoft Corp., is firing senior executives before the deal closes, a move that reduces the value of their payout, according to three people familiar with the matter.
Vice Presidents David Gurle, Christopher Dean, Russ Shaw and Don Albert were dismissed from the Luxembourg-based company, said the people, who requested anonymity because the departures aren’t public. Chief Marketing Officer Doug Bewsher and Anne Gillespie, head of human resources, were also fired. Executives Ramu Sunkara and Allyson Campa, from the 2011 Qik purchase, were also let go.
The timing of the dismissals means stock options will be worth less than if the executives stayed until the closing of the $8.5 billion deal, the people said. When a company gets bought, compensation is often tied to the purchase price, said Neil Sims, a managing director at Boyden, a search firm.
“All is good if you’re staying with that transition team or you’re packaged out,” said Sims, who is based in San Francisco. “But if you’re eliminated unceremoniously, without a package and without some negotiation, you could certainly lose unvested options.”
Silver Lake, based in Menlo Park, California, led a $2 billion buyout of a 70 percent stake in Skype from EBay Inc. in 2009. The private equity firm and several Skype directors have actively voiced their opinions on who should be fired, two of the people said.
Jenny Farrelly, a spokeswoman for Silver Lake, and Frank Shaw, a spokesman for Microsoft, declined to comment.
    ‘Management Changes’
“Skype, like any other pragmatic organization, constantly assesses its team structure to deliver its users the best products,” said Brian O’Shaughnessy, a Skype spokesman. “As part of a recent internal shift, Skype has made some management changes.”
Silver Lake hired Chief Executive Officer Tony Bates from Cisco Systems Inc. to replace Josh Silverman last year. Bates has put his stamp on Skype by trying to restore its engineering- centric roots, churning out more features at a faster pace for its 170 million active users. He also streamlined a global management structure that was decentralized and fraught with territorial disputes and slow bureaucracy. The company was headed for an initial public offering before Microsoft agreed to buy it last month.
Microsoft bought Skype with plans to connect it to Outlook e-mail, Xbox game console, Windows mobile phones and corporate- phone software. Skype offers voice and video calling over the Internet and is primarily used by consumers.
Gurle joined Skype in January 2010, overseeing its efforts to persuade corporations to adopt Skype. Dean served under Silverman as chief strategy officer, helping forge a partnership with Facebook Inc. Albert oversaw advertising endeavors including a partnership with The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Six of the departures were previously reported by Skype Journal, a blog that covers the company.
Skype was founded in 2003 by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis. The founders sold the company for $2.6 billion in 2005 to San Jose, California-based EBay.

How To Transfer Plugins to PC using NFS of dm500??

How To Transfer Plugins to PC using NFS ??
Plugins can be mounted on the PC using NFS, thereby saving scarce var space, particularly in the smaller Dreamboxes. This can be done with the following simple steps. These steps are to be carried out in strict sequence. I have been using this method with a DM5620 and with Windows XP Home in the pc.wholesale
    (A) SET UP NFS (This and section (B) were originally described in the dreambox.net.au site which has now closed. I have modified for use with Gemini1.04 )
    1. Download and unzip the attached TrueGridNFS server tgpnfs10.zip (Freeware)
    2. Create an etc directory on your pc such as :-
    C:\WINDOWS\etc
    3. Create a share directory on your pc for the nfs share (This can be the same folder as for CIFS mount as described in the Idiots Guide. The simplest way to create a share folder is to rightclick on the folder - properties - sharing - select 'share this folder in the network') such as :-
    C:\dreambox
Also create the following sub directory:-
    C:\dreambox\Plugins
    4. Create a directory and extract NFS server (tgpnfs.zip) files on your
    pc. Eg:-
    C:\TrueGridNFS
    5. Copy the two files from this folder, rpc and exports, to the etc directory that you created in step 2.
    6. Edit the exports file. Add a line at the end of the file to point to the nfs directory you created in step 3. The line should look like this:
    /dreambox -path=c:\dreambox
    7. Make sure the last line of the exports file is a blank line. Save the file.
    8. With internet connected, open a command line prompt (start-Run-cmd or command-ok) and write the command (note that each command must be followed by return) :-
    cd c:\TrueGridNFS
    9. Write the following two commands to register and setup the portmap and nfs services:
    portmap add
    nfs add
    10. Write the following commands to start the services :-
    nfs stop
    nfs start
    11. a. To show what is available to share, write the command:-
    Showmount -e
    The response should be :
    TrueGrid SHOWMOUNT UTILITY.
COPYRIGHT (C) BY XYZ SCIENTIFIC APPLICATIONS, INC., 1998
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. TrueGrid IS A TRADEMARK OF
    XYZ SCIENTIFIC APPLICATIONS, INC.
    /dreambox (everyone)
    b. To show port mapping, write the command:
    rpcinfo -p
    The response should be:
COPYRIGHT BY XYZ SCIENTIFIC APPLICATIONS, INC., 1998
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. TrueGrid IS A TRADEMARK OF
    XYZ SCIENTIFIC APPLICATIONS, INC.
    program vers proto port
    100000 2 tcp 111 portmapper
    100000 2 udp 111 portmapper
    100005 1 udp 714 mountd
    100005 1 tcp 717 mountd
    100003 2 udp 2049 nfs
The internet can now be disconnected.

    (B)MOUNT NFS
    1. On the dreambox navigate to communications setup.
    Setup>Expert Setup>Communications Setup>Mount Setup
    2. Enter your mount info:
IP: 192.168.0.1 ......................: your pc ip
    NFS
Dir: dreambox .......................: your nfs share directory
LocalDir: /hdd ........................: your db directory
    Options: rw
    Extra: nolock,rsize=8192,wsize=8192
    3. If you put an X in the Automount box the mount will be automatically
    re-established at each bootup.
    4. Select Mount (green).
    5. If the mount is successful SAVE the mount settings.

    (C) MOUNT PLUGINS
    1. Ftp the contents of the plugins directory in the Dreambox
    /var/tuxbox/plugins/
to the new mounted plugins directory in the PC created in step A3
    dreambox/plugins
    2. Verify the contents have copied correctly
    3. Delete the old plugins diectory in the Dreambox folder /var/tuxbox/
    4. Start a telnet session. To start telnet, open the command window as before and write the command :-
    telnet 192.168.0.24 (DB ip)
    5. Write when prompted :-
    Username=root
    Password=dreambox
At command prompt write the following commands to reate a symlink to the new plugins directory:-
    cd /var/tuxbox
    ln -sf /hdd/plugins
    6. Test a plugin from the Dreambox as well as check in the PC share
that newly downloaded plugins appear there.
Hey PCD, this is magic! And you say you don't deserve your title....I am speechless, you are truely a master of the dreambox!
OK, it looks a bit complicated but I will try it anyway. Might take a few days though.Got some questions though, in the true fashion of head idiot:
    Question 1)
    9. The following commands register and setup the portmap and nfs
    services:
    portmap add
    nfs add
What does that exactly mean? Do I write eaxh line in the command prompt and then enter?
    Question 2
    10. Connect to internet. Start the services.
    How? What?
    Question 3
    nfs start
    11. Check that the services are setup correctly.
    a. To show what is available to share:
    Showmount -e
    TrueGrid SHOWMOUNT UTILITY.
COPYRIGHT (C) BY XYZ SCIENTIFIC APPLICATIONS, INC., 1998
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. TrueGrid IS A TRADEMARK OF
    XYZ SCIENTIFIC APPLICATIONS, INC.
    /dreambox (everyone)
    b. To show port mapping:
    rpcinfo -p
COPYRIGHT BY XYZ SCIENTIFIC APPLICATIONS, INC., 1998
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. TrueGrid IS A TRADEMARK OF
    XYZ SCIENTIFIC APPLICATIONS, INC.
    program vers proto port
    100000 2 tcp 111 portmapper
    100000 2 udp 111 portmapper
    100005 1 udp 714 mountd
    100005 1 tcp 717 mountd
    100003 2 udp 2049 nfs
The internet can now be disconnected.
Please explain it a bit more, I am afraid it is a bit too vague for me..
    Question 4
    4. Start a telnet session. Navigate to the directory from where the old
plugins directory was removed ie /var/tuxbox
    5. Create a symlink to the new plugins directory
    ln -sf /hdd/plugins
I never used the Telnet thing, what program do I need to use? How?
Coming to think of it, maybe time to add this " Telnet" thing separatly to the Idiot Guide. Anybody??

In any case, if someone else tries it out please post your thoughts about it here, I am really interested to hear about it.
Sorry if the writing was a bit confusing, I will edit the post to make it better when I have some time. In the meantime the answers to your questions :-
